Fall Classes Begin Aug. 20

The freshman class will number about 2,180 students when Georgia Tech begins its 2001 fall semester on Aug. 20, including students from 46 states, Puerto Rico and 42 other countries.

The foreign countries sending the most freshmen to Tech are India, Korea and China, said Deborah Smith, director of admissions.

About 58 percent of incoming freshmen are expected to be from Georgia, 4 percent international, 28 percent women and 8 percent minorities (African American, Hispanic, Native American, and multicultural).

Though the mid-range of SAT scores of incoming freshmen is 1280 to 1400 at Tech, three students who scored perfect 1600s are expected to start classes this fall. The national average SAT score is 1019 and the average for students from Georgia is 974.

Other facts about the freshman class include:

  • Most popular majors: Undecided Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering.
  • By college, 4.2 percent Architecture, 16.2 percent Computing, 56.6 percent Engineering, 6 percent Ivan Allen, 5 percent Management, 12 percent Sciences. Compared to last year’s class, the increase is due to the number of students choosing Ivan Allen and Management majors.
  • Legacies: 414 new freshmen say they have a brother, sister, mother, father or grandparent who attended or graduated from Tech. This represents 18 percent of the freshman class.
  • Applications were submitted from 9,494 students representing 3,270 high schools.
  • Offered admission for fall 2001: 5,117 students from 980 high schools.
  • Freshman applications for fall 2001 were up by more than 8 percent after experiencing a 14 percent increase in applications last year.
  • Electronic applications increased to 29 percent of the freshmen this year compared to 24 percent last year.
  • The mean high school grade point average: 3.76.
  • Among the members of the 2001 freshman class are 115 National Merit Scholars and 25 National Achievement Scholars.
