The Georgia Tech Military Affinity Group is observing its celebration of Armed Forces Day on Friday, May 16 — a day early. And there's a strategy behind it.
The observance is being held at 9 a.m. Friday in the Wardlaw Building because the Georgia Tech campus will be closed on Saturday, May 17. The organization will recognize Medal of Honor recipients at the event.
Air Force Reserve Capt. Marcus Smith, EE 98, is the group's president and was instrumental in founding it.
"A lot of credit goes to Marcus. He put a lot of effort into the organization and recruited many of the volunteers," said retired Air Force Col. James A. Stevens, who served a two-year term as the organization's first president. "One of our goals is to provide scholarships for ROTC cadets and midshipmen. Last year we raised $6,500 in scholarships."
Stevens, Mgt 75, retired from the military two years ago, serving his final assignment as commander of Detachment 165, Air Force ROTC at Tech.
"I was commissioned in that detachment," Stevens said, adding that ending his career at Tech "was one of my best assignments."
Many sports fans remember Stevens as the hero of the 1972 Liberty Bowl football game. Stevens was backup quarterback but started the game and led the Yellow Jackets to a 31-30 defeat over Iowa State. Stevens, who completed 12 of 15 passes for 157 yards and three touchdowns, was named the game's most valuable player.
