Georgia Tech’s new AI “playground,” the Advanced Manufacturing Pilot Facility (AMPF) is the first of its kind in the country. In April 2026, Tech unveiled the newly renovated 20,000-square-foot facility where students and researchers have access to advanced technology that combines manufacturing with artificial intelligence.

The facility, located on 14th Street, is part of the Georgia Tech Manufacturing Institute (GTMI) and helps bridge a gap that exists between academia and industry, which has made it difficult to scale new technologies quickly. The space allows industries, startups, and researchers to invent and test new technologies before introducing them to a larger factory environment.

The Future of Advanced Manufacturing and AI

At an open house on April 30, researchers and students showcased the range of technologies available under one roof, including automation, robotics, and advanced AI.

Robots moved between the aisles while researchers demonstrated how they use 3D printers to make bio-synthetic heart valves that can be customized to a person’s unique anatomy. Nearby, students demonstrated how they control a humanoid robot’s movements from afar using a VR headset and a glove that uses tactical pressure to simulate what the robot’s hands are holding. Down another aisle, researchers showed how a metal atomization machine produced powder faster and more efficiently than previous technologies.
