George C. Griffin, CE 1922, MS IM 57

The former dean of students, George is considered “The original Mr. Georgia Tech.” Griffin created the “Hip Pocket Fund” that helped countless students and started Tech’s Central Placement Office with his own money.

John Young, AE 52, HON PhD 03

Young is the first astronaut to travel into space six times and only one to go into orbit with the Gemini, Apollo and Space Shuttle programs. He later helped other astronauts as Chief of the Astronaut Office.

President Jimmy Carter, Cls 46, HON PhD 79

Carter studied at Georgia Tech, the U.S. Naval Academy, and served as the governor of Georgia before becoming the 39th President. After his presidency, Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, founded the Carter Center. Cater was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

Bobby Jones, ME 22

Hailed as the greatest amateur golfer of all time, Robert Tyre “Bobby” Jones in 1930 became the first to win golf Grand Slam. He later designed Augusta National and co-founded the Masters Tournament. The USGA’s highest honor, the Bob Jones Award, is named after him.

Shirley Clements Mewborn, EE 56

Shirley Clements Mewborn is one of the first two female graduates from the Institute, graduating in 1956. She was a unanimous selection to the Georgia Tech Hall of Fame in 2003 and was the first woman to serve as president of the Alumni Association.

G. Wayne Clough, CE 63, MS CE 65, HON PhD 15

Georgia Tech’s 10th president and first alumnus president, Clough served 14 years during which Tech reached the top 10 in public universities, invested over $1 billion into campus improvements, and established the G. Wayne Clough Georgia Tech Promise Scholarship.

Ronald Yancey, EE 65

Georgia Tech’s first Black graduate after transferring from Morehouse, Yancey overcame racial barriers while at Tech. He’s immortalized at Tech with a statue in the Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons staircase.

Diane Michel

Michel was one of the two first female Tech students alongside Elizabeth Herndon in 1952. In 1956, she became the first female graduate to complete in a traditional four-year track at Tech.
